SARAJEVO, (Patria) - Sweden is the new European handball champion, after a thriller in the final against Spain, which the Scandinavians won by a huge margin.
The final result was set after 60 minutes of play, with a penalty throw that Ekberg converted into victory.
The match was close in score the entire time. The teams alternated in the lead, with neither managing to achieve a tangible advantage.
In such circumstances, the very end of the match predictably served up drama. Sweden took a 26:24 lead with five minutes left, but Furia managed to equalize – 26:26.
At that score, Spain did not capitalize on their last attack, and in the final seconds, the Scandinavian team was awarded a penalty throw. Ekberg scored for a 27:26 triumph!
For the Swedes, this is their fifth continental championship title, the most of all other national teams in Europe.
