Swimming coach Evelin Avdić: Joints are most often injured in improper water jumps

Two drownings have been recorded in Bosnia and Herzegovina in just six days as a result of improper water jumps.

Slovenian diver Andrej Beuc drowned in Zvornik after jumping from the city bridge. A few days later, a young man without experience drowned after jumping from the Old Bridge in Mostar. In neither case has it yet been determined why the divers drowned, but fractures of the vertebrae are suspected.

Swimming coach Evelin Avdić from the Swimming Club “Sporttime” says in a statement to the Patria news agency that diving is a beautiful, Olympic sport, but, he warns, water diving must be approached very seriously. One should not jump from heights that the diver is not ready for.

- In improper jumps, joints are most often injured. The diver is then unable to swim and problems occur - says Avdić. He adds that, therefore, before jumping into the water, two conditions must be met; to check if the place in the water where the diver jumps is safe, and to assess whether the diver is ready for the height of the diving board.

- Divers jump from heights that are greater than both the bridge in Zvornik and the Old Bridge in Mostar, and there are no injuries. So, we see that everything depends on how prepared and how careful the diver is - says Avdić, writes Patria.
