
(Patria) - The transit of Russian grains through Latvia jumped 2.6 times in the first quarter compared to the same period last year - to 139,400 tons, the Russian news agency Interfax quoted data from the Latvian tax administration.
The transit of wheat, and a mixture of wheat and rye from Russia through the territory of Latvia was also almost three times higher than at the beginning of 2025, reaching 133,694 tons in the period from January to March, Latvian data shows.
A similar jump was recorded in the transit of rapeseed, to a total of 4,493 tons. However, the transit of rice and corn has noticeably decreased.
In the period from January to March, 40.7 tons of rice passed through Latvian territory, a decrease of 66.7 percent compared to the first three months of last year. The transit of corn decreased by as much as 75 percent, to 10.1 tons.
Latvian data also showed the transit of 15 tons of sorghum, Interfax reports. In the first quarter of last year, this grain did not pass through Latvian territory from Russia.
Last year, a total of 673,490 tons of grains were transported from Russia through Latvia, a decrease of 65.5 percent compared to 2024.
The transit of Russian wheat, as well as the mixture of wheat and rye, decreased by 54.6 percent, to 665,700 tons.
