Theresa May to step down as Prime Minister on June 7

(Patria) – British Prime Minister Theresa May announced on Friday that she will step down as leader of the Conservative Party and Prime Minister on June 7.

In an emotional address to the public, May stated that the position of Prime Minister of Great Britain represented a 'lifelong honor' for her, and that she is leaving 'without bitterness, and with immense and lasting gratitude'.

She also listed the government's achievements during her three-year term, including success in combating the deficit and reducing unemployment.

She added that she will always deeply regret not being able to implement Brexit.

However, her long-awaited resignation will not bring a solution to the three-year political stalemate in Great Britain unless the new prime minister is able to find an adequate and timely solution for Brexit that will be supported by parliament.

May announced the resignation date at a meeting with the chairman of the Tory 1922 Committee.

May's resignation date became imminent after Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt and Secretary Sajid Javid informed her that they could no longer support her Brexit strategy, which opens the possibility of a second referendum on Great Britain's departure from the EU.

Additional pressure comes from the European Parliament elections, in which her native Tories have lost support.

After the resignation date is announced, a fierce battle for a new prime minister will begin. The name most often mentioned in this context is Boris Johnson, the favorite of the pro-Brexit Tories.

Ministers who do not support Johnson fear that he could lead Britain to a no-deal Brexit, which would ultimately be extremely damaging to the country.
