Typhoon Goni hits Japan

Strong Typhoon Goni hit Japan, bringing record rainfall of 134.5 millimetres per square metre, winds of 165 kilometres per hour, and triggering a landslide in the southwest of the island of Kyushu, where more than 20 people were injured, Japan's Kyodo news agency reported, citing the Patria news agency.

Power outages affected more than 470,000 households on Kyushu, and local authorities issued an evacuation order for 280,000 residents.

Many flights to and from airports on Kyushu have been cancelled, and all rail and bus services on the island have been suspended.

The typhoon arrived from the north of the Philippines, where last weekend at least 26 people lost their lives in a landslide in the mountainous province of Benguet, officials said.

Rescue teams reached the nearby mountains of the remote mining town of Mankayan in the north of the country, where the bodies of miners who died in the landslide were found, and it is unknown how many are still missing, as the area was hit by a storm two days earlier, AFP reports.

The typhoon reached southwestern Japan during the morning local time, before moving further towards the Sea of Japan.

There have been no reports of casualties from the storm, although at least 26 people have been injured and 15 are missing, as Typhoon Goni damaged buildings, overturned cars, uprooted trees and flooded streets.
