Taiwan: A global model for crisis management offers a helping hand to the world

(Patria) – Taiwan has reported 329 confirmed cases of coronavirus infection and 5 deaths since the beginning of the epidemic, small numbers compared to the rest of the world.

This country serves as an example to the world due to timely and effective measures that have prevented the rapid spread of infection, as is the case with most of its neighbors.

However, the problem Taiwan faces concerns closed world borders, as the country's economy is largely based on exports.

The government has already approved a financial aid package for local businesses amounting to 35 billion dollars in the first round.

Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen announced that financial support will ultimately amount to 1 trillion US dollars.

The pandemic has also led to a kind of international isolation of Taiwan due to pressure from China, which considers the island its own territory despite its autonomy and separate government.

Taiwan launched the 'Taiwan can help' campaign earlier, offering support and assistance in knowledge and experience to other countries around the world in combating the pandemic, including the production and distribution of masks.

- In the past months, we have had the opportunity to witness countless acts of courage and sacrifice by healthcare workers around the world. It is our duty as citizens of the world to give them full support, said the president, adding that 'we should take cooperation to a higher level by sharing experiences and materials, as well as working together on the development of treatments and vaccines'.

Among other things, Taiwan will donate about 7 million protective masks to European countries, while sending 2 million to the United States, and the rest of the surplus to countries with which it has formal diplomatic relations.
