Ceremony at OHR: Mayor and High Representative unveil 'Dayton Peace Square' plaque

(Patria) - The Mayor of Sarajevo, Samir Avdić, and High Representative Christian Schmidt today ceremonially unveiled the "Dayton Peace Square" plaque in front of the Office of the High Representative (OHR) building, paying tribute to the Peace Agreement that ended the war and laid the foundation for the institutional development of BiH.

This symbolic act serves as a reminder of the enduring commitment to preserving peace, respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and continuing reforms aimed at the country's European future.

According to Mayor Avdić, the plaque is a symbol of partnership, responsibility, and lasting dedication to peace.

- It reminds us that peace is not a given forever. It is a process that requires constant care, mutual dialogue, and respect - said Avdić.

With this act, he emphasized, we once again confirm Bosnia and Herzegovina's commitment to stability, prosperity, and its European path.

- With a message to the youth to preserve the hard-won values through knowledge, tolerance, and courage, and to continue building a society of equal opportunities, justice, and mutual understanding - Avdić emphasized in his address.

High Representative Christian Schmidt said that he believes we are all called upon to support the key principles of the Dayton Agreement - it remains the cornerstone of BiH's stability.

- We cannot say that the agreement was easy, it is complicated and its implementation is difficult.

The agreement has many limitations, but these need to be overcome to move towards the implementation of the agreement towards EU membership.

The future of this country lies in the hands of its leaders and its citizens - said Schmidt.

He thanked Mayor Avdić for supporting the idea developed in November last year by the High Representative and Congressman Mike Turner, who was the mayor of Dayton at the time of the agreement's signing, and who was also declared an Honorary Citizen of Sarajevo by Mayor Avdić's decision.
