(Patria) - The Centre for Environmental Protection announced that they visited the Una River and offered support to the locals in their fight to preserve this river from the scourge of building a hydroelectric power plant at its source.
Namely, in the village of Donja Suvaja, municipality of Gračac, a private company began construction work on a small hydroelectric power plant at the very source of the Una River this month.
"These actions lead to the degradation of this area, which has been a protected hydrological monument of nature since 1968, and today it is also recognized as a Natura 2000 area.
Despite all this, the investor, against the will of the local population, without an environmental impact assessment, without a transboundary impact assessment on the further course of the Una River through Bosnia and Herzegovina, and with dubious permits, continues to build and destroy this area.
The source of the Una River, at 248 meters, is considered one of the deepest in Europe. The Una River itself represents one of the most significant rivers in the Balkans, with its geological and hydrological characteristics, as well as the presence of diverse wildlife.
During the past week, an inspection visited this location, and concrete measures are expected soon. In addition, locals are scheduling new protests for tomorrow (Thursday, July 25) to urgently stop this harmful work and the devastation of the Una River, and to point out that this area needs much greater protection, not the devastation that is currently underway," stated the Centre for Environmental Protection.
