Meeting in New York: Amra Šabić El-Rayess presents Edin Džeko's jersey to Mayor Zohran Mamdani

(Patria) - Amra Šabić El-Rayess, a professor at Columbia University in New York, met with New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani and presented him with a special gift: the jersey of Edin Džeko, captain of the Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) national football team.

A native of Bihać now residing in the United States (USA), she shared details of this meeting on social media, not hiding her delight at the reaction of New York's first man when he saw the recognizable blue jersey with the number 11.

"It was an immense pleasure to capture the smile and happiness of Mayor Mamdani when he saw the BiH national team jersey and Džeko's name on it," said Šabić-El-Rayess.

She also linked this moment to the great sports celebration currently taking place on the streets of New York. Namely, the New York Knicks basketball team became NBA champions for the first time after 53 long years of waiting, causing great euphoria in the city.

"I hope that this positive and winning energy, through the smile of New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani, will reach the BiH national team," emphasized Šabić-El-Rayess, adding that she can't wait to cheer for the BiH team live at the upcoming match in Seattle.

In her emotional message, Šabić-El-Rayess stressed that the success of BiH athletes is an inspiration on a global level and carries a deep message about the mentality of people from BiH.

"The whole world is fascinated by the story of BiH footballers – a beautiful and unexpected story of success, perseverance, and hope that has delighted and surprised many, except for us who know that when we want to achieve our dreams – we can do anything. Our perseverance and determination are inexhaustible sources of strength even when things are hardest for us," the professor wrote.

Finally, she sent a strong message to the BiH national team players.

"Keep going, guys, with 'Bismillah' and a smile, you have much to be proud of! You are witnesses that Bosnia exists and always will. God willing, see you in Seattle," concluded Šabić-El-Rayess.
