Suljagić called on TikTok, Meta and Google to prevent denial of the Srebrenica genocide

(Patria) - The Srebrenica Memorial Center (MC) held a presentation today at the GlobalFact Summit taking place in Sarajevo.

Before representatives of Meta, Google, TikTok and numerous relevant representatives of key social platforms in the world, the director of MC Srebrenica, Emir Suljagić, presented the "Srebrenica Genocide Awareness Social Media Pledge", whose goal is for social networks to assume mandatory content control and stop the denial of genocide on social networks.

- The first thing we ask for is strict content moderation. It is necessary to implement rigorous content moderation policies to quickly identify and remove posts that deny the Srebrenica genocide or spread hate speech against Bosniak victims, in accordance with the UN General Assembly resolution and the rulings of the International Court of Justice and the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia.



Together we can launch educational campaigns on these platforms to inform users about the facts of the Srebrenica genocide, highlighting the importance of historical accuracy and the consequences of denial - Suljagić said.

The goal is to improve user reporting mechanisms to facilitate and expedite the reporting of content that denies the Srebrenica genocide or targets Bosniak victims, ensuring swift review and action by the platforms.

The Memorial Center wants to encourage partnerships of social networks with historians, genocide experts and victim advocacy groups to create accurate and respectful content guidelines and provide expertise in the moderation process.

Networks would commit to publishing transparency reports detailing measures taken against genocide denial and hate speech, including the number of removed posts, suspended accounts and the effectiveness of implemented policies.



- Today is a historic step and an indicator that Bosnia and Herzegovina as a state is ready to take a step further in the fight against hate speech on modern platforms.
