(Patria) - Murat Tahirović, president of the Association of Victims and Witnesses of Genocide, and Munira Subašić, president of the Association Movement of Mothers of the Srebrenica and Žepa Enclaves, recently wrote to Olufemi Elias, secretary of the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Courts, expressing their concern and frustration over the continuous shameful behavior of convicted war criminal Radovan Karadžić, who is held in the Scheveningen detention unit.
The letter is related to the fact that war criminal Radovan Karadžić called from The Hague and participated in a forum in Montenegro led by another war criminal, Momčilo Krajišnik.
They did not have to wait long for a response, in which Olufemi Elias informs them that, in accordance with the current Rules of Detention and the Rules on the Supervision of Visits and Communications with Detainees, he has instructed the manager of the United Nations Detention Unit to listen to and summarize the non-privileged telephone conversations of detainee Karadžić during the last five days, from May 1, 2019, including that date.
"In addition, to reduce the risk of possible recurrence of the violation in the future, the manager will also listen to and summarize Karadžić's future non-privileged telephone conversations, starting from May 6, 2019, for a period of seven days. This decision is based on the possibility that Karadžić may have committed a violation when he apparently participated in a public event without the manager's approval. In this regard, I acknowledge the concerns you have raised and would like to inform you that steps are being taken to investigate this matter. I assure you that resolving this issue is a priority for the Secretariat," the response states.
