Stari Grad begins scholarships for talented athletes

SARAJEVO, (Patria) - The municipality of Stari Grad is starting scholarships for primary and secondary school students who are talented athletes. The public call for scholarships for talented athletes was announced today and will last for the next 15 days.

"This is a new way of stimulating young people to engage in sports for which they are talented and successful, and it is the first example of a local community that scholarships its students in this way. Students of primary and secondary schools aged ten and over who have resided in the area of the municipality of Stari Grad Sarajevo for more than five years and who are members of a club registered for competition in the official professional/sports association of Bosnia and Herzegovina can apply. The minimum achievement required for applications to be scored is first, second or third place at national competitions.
Scholarships will be awarded for results achieved in 2019 and will be paid over twelve months for the period January-December 2020.

Top athletes need a special diet, equipment and continuous preparation, which requires additional financial resources. These scholarships will be an incentive for young people to become more actively involved in sports activities," the Stari Grad Municipality stated.

As previously stated by the municipal mayor Ibrahim Hadžibajrić, the municipality allocates significant funds for financing football, volleyball, chess and table tennis leagues for its primary school students, and a women's football league is also planned. All this is done to motivate children to engage in sports and a more active and healthy life.

"There is no better ambassador for Bosnia and Herzegovina in the world than sports. We are aware of that and that is why we invest so much in our children. Through our leagues, we can already recognize real talents who will one day achieve world-class success," Hadžibajrić stated. "That is precisely why, because we have such talented boys and girls in various sports, we decided to further motivate them with monthly scholarships," he added.

According to the Rulebook on scholarships for talented athletes, participation in the Olympic and Paralympic Games, participation in the Universiade, first, second and third place at world championships and cups, European championships and cups, Mediterranean Games, and first, second and third place at the national championship will also be evaluated.
