KS Civil Protection Headquarters: Monitor the situation at Ćurine njive, citizens should not move near tall trees and roofs

(Patria) - Based on Article 108 of the Law on Protection and Rescue of People and Material Goods from Natural and Other Disasters, the Civil Protection Headquarters of Sarajevo Canton, at its session held on 05.01.2025, adopted recommendations for the implementation of protection and rescue measures due to the announced heavy rainfall.

RECOMMENDATIONS

1. The Civil Protection Headquarters of Sarajevo Canton, based on the report submitted by the Cantonal Civil Protection Operational Center, notes that the Cantonal Civil Protection Administration of Sarajevo Canton and municipal civil protection services from the Sarajevo Canton area, immediately upon receiving the Warning about heavy rainfall from the Federal Hydrometeorological Institute and the Warning and recommendations for implementing protection and rescue measures due to the announced extreme heavy rainfall from the Federal Civil Protection Administration, have put their organized protection and rescue forces on alert, and that during yesterday, they monitored the situation in the area of all municipalities in Sarajevo Canton and, in cooperation with competent public utility companies and services, undertook measures and activities within their jurisdiction, thus ensuring the functioning of vital societal functions in the Sarajevo Canton area.

2. Given that, according to the forecasts of the Federal Hydrometeorological Institute, heavy snowfall is also expected in the Sarajevo Canton area in the coming period, which can cause problems in the functioning of vital societal functions, and that the rapid melting of snow can cause flash floods and landslides, we recommend to the municipal civil protection services from the Sarajevo Canton area to continuously patrol the most endangered areas from snowfall, floods, and landslides, and to immediately put their organized protection and rescue forces on alert, so that they are ready as first responders to react, in accordance with their jurisdictions and obligations according to protection and rescue plans, to potentially heavy snowfall, and the occurrence of floods and landslides in their municipalities.

3. We recommend to the Municipal Civil Protection Service of Stari Grad Sarajevo to continuously monitor the situation at the Ćurine njive landslide, in accordance with the orders of the Civil Protection Headquarters of Sarajevo Canton, and to immediately take measures to remove improperly parked vehicles on the roads leading to the Ćurine njive locality, in order to create conditions for snow removal from these roads, and to immediately report this to the Civil Protection Headquarters of Sarajevo Canton and the Cantonal Civil Protection Administration of Sarajevo Canton.

4. We recommend to the Cantonal Civil Protection Administration of Sarajevo Canton to continuously monitor the situation in the Sarajevo Canton area and to report it to the Civil Protection Headquarters of Sarajevo Canton.

5. We recommend to the competent cantonal administrative bodies and municipal administrative services to engage legal entities (with whom they have signed agreements/contracts for winter road maintenance) at full capacity for continuous snow removal from roads.

6. We recommend to all legal entities to take preventive protection and rescue measures against snowfall, floods, and landslides in a timely manner, and to take measures in accordance with valid regulations to remove snow in front of entrances to residential, health, educational, cultural, public, business, industrial, sports, and other facilities of wider importance, and to take measures to remove icicles from the roofs of said facilities and snow if its weight poses a danger to the roofs of the facilities.

7. We recommend to citizens to take timely measures in accordance with valid regulations within the framework of implementing personal and mutual citizen protection to clear snow in front of their facilities, and to remove icicles and snow from roofs.

8. We recommend to citizens not to move near tall trees and buildings due to the danger of collapsing trees, falling icicles and snow from building roofs.

9. We recommend to the competent inspection authorities to intensify field activities and, in accordance with their powers, to take measures against all legal and natural persons who, by failing to fulfill their legal obligations, further increase the danger to people and material goods.
