Serbia heads to EURO after 24 years, Montenegro eliminated

(Patria) - The qualifiers for the European Championship in Group G have concluded, and along with Hungary, which had previously secured its spot in Germany, Serbia has also qualified for the Euro, amidst unusual events in the final round.

Serbia needed at least a point against Bulgaria in Leskovac today to secure their place at the Euro, and it seemed they wouldn't have much trouble when Veljković scored in the 17th minute for 1:0.

In the first 45 minutes, Serbia largely controlled the proceedings on the field, had several more chances, and Mitrović's goal was disallowed, but a big comeback by Bulgaria followed in the second half.

Rusev equalized to 1:1 in the 59th minute, and ten minutes later, Despodov scored for another Bulgarian celebration and a huge shock for Serbian players and fans. Serbs managed to equalize from a corner, with Babić heading in a cross for the final 2:2.

However, things could have been completely different beforehand, as they were losing, and Montenegro was leading in Hungary. Fortunately for them, Hungary managed to turn the score around against Montenegro, winning 3:1.

Montenegro took the lead in the 36th minute with a goal from Rubežić, making their dream of going to the Euro seem more realistic, but just as Serbia conceded goals from Bulgaria, Montenegro also conceded goals from the Hungarians.

Hungary finished the group undefeated with 18 points, Serbia was second with 14, Montenegro remained third with 11 points, Lithuania won six, and Bulgaria four points.
