21st World Championship opened with spectacular ceremony

The World Cup in football was opened on Thursday with a ceremonial ceremony at Moscow's "Luzhniki" Stadium, capacity 81,000 spectators.

At the opening of this year's World Cup in Russia, British star Robbie Williams performed, accompanied by Russian soprano Aida Garifullina.

Former Brazilian football star Ronaldo also appeared at the spectacular opening.

The competition, in which a total of 32 national teams will fight for the world title, began with a match between hosts Russia and Saudi Arabia in Group A.

An Argentine refereeing team led by Nestor Pitana officiates this match.

A total of 64 matches will be played during the World Cup, with the final match scheduled for July 15, also to be played in Moscow.
