Snow, ice, and low temperatures: Recommendations for citizens to preserve health

Due to heavy snowfall and low temperatures, ice formation, and other adverse weather conditions, extra caution is necessary, according to the Institute for Health and Food Safety Zenica.

Heavy snowfall and low temperatures that have affected our country, especially the central BiH region, can have a significant impact on the health of the population, particularly children, the elderly, chronically ill, and socially vulnerable groups.

In winter conditions, the risk of respiratory infections, worsening of chronic diseases, injuries due to falls, as well as hypothermia and frostbite increases.

Spending time outdoors should be minimized, especially in the early morning and evening hours.

When leaving the house or apartment, it is important to dress in layers, wear warm and waterproof footwear, and protect exposed body parts.

Special attention should be paid to children and the elderly, for whom cold can more quickly lead to a deterioration of their health.

Citizens are advised to avoid, as much as possible, moving near tall trees and structures due to the danger of falling branches, icicles, and large amounts of snow from building roofs or branches, which can cause injuries or fatalities.

Adequate and safe heating must be ensured in indoor spaces. Improper use of heaters, stoves, and other heat sources can lead to carbon monoxide poisoning, which poses a serious threat to health and life.

Regular ventilation of rooms, as well as checking the condition of chimneys and ventilation, are of key importance, according to INZ.

Physical exertion, such as snow shoveling, can pose an additional risk, especially for people with heart and respiratory diseases. A moderate pace of work, taking breaks, and avoiding sudden exertion are recommended.

In case of symptoms such as difficulty breathing, chest pain, dizziness, or severe fatigue, it is necessary to stop the activity immediately and seek medical attention.

During the winter period, it is also important to pay attention to proper nutrition and adequate fluid intake. Warm meals, sufficient vitamin intake, and regular hydration contribute to strengthening immunity and improving the body's resistance.

Special attention should be paid to the elderly living alone, chronically ill patients, and socially vulnerable citizens.

Regular contact, assistance with obtaining medication, food, and firewood, as well as monitoring health status, play an important role in preventing serious health consequences during winter weather events.

In case of worsening health or the appearance of emergency symptoms, the population is urged to contact the nearest health facility or emergency medical service.
