(Patria) - The sister of the North Korean leader stated that the country has never removed propaganda loudspeakers and will not do so, calling South Korea's belief that Pyongyang is responding to its peace overtures an 'unrealistic dream', Reuters reported.
Kim Yo Jong, a senior official of the ruling Workers' Party of North Korea, also said that the change of plan for the annual joint military exercises of South Korea and the United States is a 'futile' move that does not change the hostile intentions of the allies.
Kim, who some believe speaks on behalf of her brother, has in recent weeks rejected moves taken by South Korea's new liberal government aimed at easing tensions between the two Koreas.
'I am convinced that Seoul's policy toward the DPRK remains unchanged and can never be changed,' Kim Yo Jong was quoted as saying by the official KCNA news agency. DPRK is an abbreviation for the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, the official name of North Korea.
The South Korean military said it detected attempts by the North Korean military to dismantle some propaganda loudspeakers directed toward South Korea, following similar moves by Seoul.
In Seoul, there is cautious optimism that North Korea could respond positively to President Lee Jae Myung's policy of engaging with Pyongyang after a period of cross-border tensions, and even show willingness to return to dialogue.
Kim Yo Jong also said that North Korea will not sit down at the table with the United States, saying that reports highlighting the possibility of such a development are 'false assumptions.'
