Session of the Civil Protection Headquarters of Sarajevo Canton: They claim there was no increase in the number of injuries with fractures from falls on ice

(Patria) - The Civil Protection Headquarters of Sarajevo Canton held its Fourth Emergency Session today, analyzing the situation caused by recent snowfall and planned activities regarding the announced rise in temperatures and snowmelt. In addition to the Headquarters members, the session was attended by representatives of all municipal civil protection headquarters in the Sarajevo Canton area, as well as directors and representatives of relevant cantonal public utility companies (KJKP Rad, KJKP ViK, and KJKP Park) and the director of the Cantonal Administration for Inspection Affairs of Sarajevo Canton.

After reviewing the current situation in the Sarajevo Canton area caused by snowfall, as well as a detailed analysis of field reports submitted by all municipal civil protection headquarters and cantonal public companies, and Headquarters members, the Headquarters adopted the following conclusions:

- It was emphasized that in the previous period (from January 4 to January 13, 2026), vital societal functions in Sarajevo Canton operated, albeit under difficult conditions. The functioning of the supply system for energy, basic foodstuffs, medicines, and other necessities continued without interruption, as did traffic flow within realistic weather conditions. Uninterrupted operation of the healthcare system was ensured, and citizens' requests for medical assistance were responded to in a timely manner, along with regular food delivery to users of the public kitchen under the jurisdiction of the Red Cross of Sarajevo Canton. According to information from the Headquarters member representing the Ministry of Health of Sarajevo Canton, no increase in the number of injuries with fractures caused by snow and ice was recorded.

- It was determined by the Headquarters, as well as all representatives of municipal civil protection headquarters, that in the past period there were no legal conditions or need to declare a state of natural disaster in the municipalities, and consequently in the Sarajevo Canton area. No municipal civil protection headquarters in the Sarajevo Canton area requested any type of assistance from the Headquarters or the Cantonal Civil Protection Administration of Sarajevo Canton. Machinery from the Cantonal Civil Protection Administration, as well as machinery procured by the Cantonal Civil Protection Administration and provided for use by municipal civil protection services, was used to mitigate the consequences of snowfall.

- In the coming period, the Cantonal Civil Protection Administration and municipal civil protection services will pay special attention to taking measures and activities to monitor water levels in areas most at risk of flooding, due to the rise in temperatures in the upcoming period.

- The Headquarters once again appeals to all legal and natural persons, especially building managers, to immediately proceed with the safe removal of icicles and snow from building roofs in accordance with previously issued recommendations and warnings by the Headquarters, the Cantonal Civil Protection Administration, and competent inspection authorities.

- The Headquarters will continue to monitor the situation in the Sarajevo Canton area in accordance with forecasts from the Federal Hydrometeorological Institute and recommendations from other bodies and expert services, and will promptly inform the public of all important information.
