Remembering a Sarajevo hero: Nusret Daut set a tank on fire with a gasoline bottle, saying 'Even if I die now, I wouldn't regret it'

(Patria) - Nusret Daut was the first man in Sarajevo to destroy a tank – it was Sarajevo's first victory of man over an armored vehicle.

May 10th marks the anniversary of this hero's passing.

When the aggressor forces occupied Sarajevo in 1992, brave Sarajevans showed and proved their patriotism.

Despite the fact that the Army of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina was not yet formed, meaning no one was forced to defend their country, most Sarajevans took up rifles and went to defend the occupied city.

Among the brave Sarajevans was Nusret Daut.

He was born on October 15, 1963. He lived in Sarajevo and worked at the train station.

When the war started, he immediately took up a rifle like his comrades and went to the front line. He participated in all actions where help was needed.

Daut was the first man in Sarajevo to destroy a tank. Unfortunately, on that day, shortly after his victory over the tank, he was killed.

He was killed on the unfortunate day of May 10, 1992, at Hrasno brdo, when Serbian aggressors tried to enter the already occupied Sarajevo with a tank.

Nusret approached the tank with a gasoline bottle, without any weapons.

When he set the tank on fire, he said: 'Even if I die now, I wouldn't regret it.' These were, unfortunately, his last words.

He was mowed down by a Chetnik burst of fire and died as a soldier, a member of the Municipal Staff of the Territorial Defense Novi Grad Sarajevo.

For his bravery, he received the highest wartime recognition, the 'Golden Lily'.
