The situation in Tovarnik is still difficult, writes Glas Slavonije. Yesterday, there were about 3,000 refugees in that small village, and the arrival of new refugees, unofficially learned from the police, continues, reports the Patria news agency.
Two-thirds of the 14,000 refugees, who according to data from the Croatian Ministry of the Interior entered yesterday by 2 p.m., entered through the Tovarnik area. However, there were no major incidents, it was said at the meeting of the Protection and Rescue Headquarters in Tovarnik.
The entire village helps the refugees in Tovarnik. Among the many people sitting by the road is a family of seven from Syria.
"We have been on the road for 12 days, the whole family, my wife and I and our five children. It was hard, but here in Croatia everyone is good, they are very good to us. We are going to Germany. In Syria, people die every day, we are fleeing war," says Ibrahim Algharay, a mechanical engineer. His wife, he says, is an English teacher. In Germany, they hope for a job and a better life.
In Ilača, locals distribute food, water, and medicine to the refugees.
"We have been here for the second day. We bring them water and food, women brought bread, jams, whatever we have at home. They are poor people, they don't know where they are going, what awaits them. We went through the ordeal in the Homeland War when we had to leave our homes, but we went to our own, to safety. Nothing bad happens to them here in Ilača, they are calm, tired. We also bring them painkillers," say two women from Ilača, Ivanka Lučić and Slavica Adašević.
"I don't know what would happen to these people if the village hadn't come to their aid," adds student Ines Čoti, whom her mother brought to help because she speaks English well.
Although satisfied with the treatment in Croatia, the refugees note that they do not want to sit by the road but want to move on.
Doctors Without Borders have also arrived in the village, and volunteers and Red Cross workers are everywhere. Refugees with small children show that they have received diapers, writes Index.
