Across BiH, 170,000 mines still 'sown': 'Do not enter unknown areas'

(Patria) - The Mine Action Centre in BiH (BHMAC) reminded today that the suspected hazardous mine area in our country currently amounts to 822.87 km², or 1.60% of the total land area.

Locations contaminated with mines/UXO directly affect the safety of approximately 540,000 citizens, or about 15% of the total population of BiH.

The most contaminated areas are Maglaj, Velika Kladuša, Orašje, Posavina, the Tuzla and Doboj regions, Bosanski Brod, Bosanski Šamac, and Lopare.

Since the beginning of mine action in BiH in 1996, an area of 3,377 km² has been cleared.

Statistics show that the highest number of accidents occurs in spring and autumn. From BHMAC, they once again draw attention to the fact that it is most important not to risk your lives and not to enter unknown areas.

According to estimates, around 170,000 mines and other explosive remnants of war still await discovery, and every removed mine is at least one life saved.
