Shinzo Abe re-elected as Prime Minister of Japan

Shinzo Abe has been re-elected as Japanese Prime Minister after his ruling bloc achieved a major electoral victory last month and a few days before the visit of American President Donald Trump, which is expected to be dominated by the issue of North Korea, world media report, Patria agency conveys.

Abe took over the post of Prime Minister in December 2012, promising to revive the stagnant economy and strengthen the country's defense.

The coalition led by his Liberal Democratic Party retained a two-thirds majority in the Lower House of Parliament in the elections held on October 22, giving new momentum to his efforts to amend the country's post-war pacifist constitution.

Abe is expected to retain the current ministers in the new government and task them with drafting a new budget with an emphasis on child support and strengthening productivity.

In a phone call on Monday, Abe and Trump agreed to work together on steps to respond to North Korea's nuclear weapons development.

Trump told Abe that he "looks forward to visiting Japan" on November 5, adding that Japan and America are "one hundred percent together" and that "there is no room for doubt in the US-Japan alliance," Japanese government official Yasutoshi Nishimura told reporters.
