The President of the European Parliament said he expects the interior ministers of the European Union to agree on a voluntary scheme for relocating 160,000 refugees at their meeting on Tuesday, reports the Patria News Agency.
"There will be discussions, but in the end, there will be an agreement on the distribution of 160,000 migrants," Martin Schulz told German public broadcaster Deutschlandfunk.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel called on other European leaders to accept shared responsibility in the worst migration crisis on the continent since World War II at an emergency meeting on Wednesday.
The proposal being discussed before the meeting of EU interior ministers on Tuesday consists of relocating 120,000 asylum seekers over the next two years across the entire bloc, but the increase in the number of refugees has led European leaders to start talking about the figure of 160,000, writes Index.
