(Patria) - The German organization Tüv Süd, which deals with certification and inspections, has given several interesting tips on economical driving. Some you know, and some you might not.
To save fuel, shift to a higher gear at 2,000 rpm.
Also, many drivers feel the need to stay in a lower gear, but already at 50 km/h you can be in fourth gear, and depending on the gear ratios and engine type (turbodiesel, turbobenzine...), perhaps even in fifth.
Fuel consumption drops by as much as fifty percent if you are in fourth gear instead of second at the mentioned speed.
New automatic transmissions optimize gear selection, but with manual transmissions, you will have to choose.
When you see a red light at the traffic light, take your foot off the gas and approach the traffic light slowly.
Do not press the accelerator pedal until the last moment and then brake hard.
On the highway, do not drive faster than 130 km/h. Often, due to the nature of traffic, constant braking and acceleration, the time gain is minimal, and fuel consumption increases.
Get rid of unnecessary ballast, i.e., things in the car that increase mass. An additional 100 kilograms in the vehicle increases consumption by 0.3 liters.
The same applies to accessories such as roof boxes and bicycle racks, which impair the car's aerodynamics and increase fuel consumption - states HAK.
Finally, tires inflated 0.2 bar too low increase fuel consumption by ten percent.
