Sarajevo received electric lighting before today's famous world metropolises of London and Paris, as well as cities in neighboring countries like Zagreb, Ljubljana... writes bh. news agency Patria (NAP).
The first electric lamps in Sarajevo shone, on a trial basis, in Koševska Street, Ćemaluša to Ferhadija, and Čekrekčinica on April 3 and 4, 1895.
The Austro-Hungarian authorities, who governed Sarajevo during that period, began the construction of a hydroelectric power plant at Hiseta on the Miljacka River in 1893, and from May 1, 1895, the installation of electrical wiring in the most important streets and buildings in the city began.
More important streets in the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina were lit by gas lamps until then, and earlier by oil lamps, writes Patria.
