(Patria) - Sarajevo Remembers Its Hero: 34 Years Marked Since the Death of Enver Šakić – Ene

By laying flowers and paying tribute, the 34th anniversary of the death of Enver Šakić – Ene, “Zlatni ljiljan” and commander of the Green Berets unit, was marked today. Flowers were first laid at the place of death, the memorial plaque in Bistrik Street, at the Baličevac family house. In that house in 1991, the “PJAF Bosna 22” unit was formed, which was commanded by Šakić, and the plaque was solemnly unveiled in 2020.

At the Kovači martyrs' cemetery today, comrades, friends and family members gathered to recall the significance of the sacrifice that Enver Šakić made in the most difficult days of the defence of Sarajevo and Bosnia and Herzegovina. The Minister for Veterans' Affairs of the Sarajevo Canton, Omer Osmanović, said that anniversaries like this are not only a reminder of painful losses, but also a warning of how expensively freedom was paid for.

‘’When we speak of Enver Šakić – Ena, at the same time we speak of a generation of people who, without calculation, stood up to defend their people and their state. Such people did not think about fear, nor about personal sacrifice. They thought about the fact that Bosnia and Herzegovina must survive. It is our obligation never to leave their names to be forgotten, because a people who forgets its heroes risks losing its own dignity“, Osmanović stated.

He added that the culture of remembrance must remain a permanent value of society, especially among young generations who need to know the price their freedom was paid by the best sons of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Enver Eno Šakić was killed in a combat action at Alipašino Polje on 15 May 1992. For all his merits, he is the bearer of the Order for Military Merits with Golden Swords and the recipient of the highest wartime recognition “Zlatni ljiljan”.
