Sarajevo hosted United 57 years ago: No goals at Koševo, but 40,000 spectators filled the stands

(Patria) - Football Club (FK) Sarajevo hosted Manchester United at the Koševo stadium on November 15, 1967.

Forty thousand spectators did not get to see goals, but many remember the unforgettable atmosphere and numerous chances for Sarajevo players, writes Historija.ba.

After a confident 3-1 victory and eliminating Olympiacos (Nicosia), the draw decided that Sarajevo would face the English champions, Manchester United, in the quarter-finals of the European Cup.

At that moment, the league results did not bode well ahead of United's visit. One win against Radnički, with two losses, at Kantrida, and against the traditionally tough Vojvodina at Koševo.

However, with a recovered Musemić, and the support of nearly 40,000 fans, Sarajevo hosted the English, and in a brave and determined game, were even the better side. The match ended without a winner.

Due to the guests' rough play, regular first-team player Boško Prodanović suffered a serious injury, forcing him to be sidelined until May of the following year.

In the return leg at Old Trafford, United, led by one of the greatest footballers of all time, George Best, won 2-1.

The consolation goal for Sarajevo was scored by Delalić. With this victory, United advanced to the quarter-finals and later won the European Cup.
