SARAJEVO, (Patria) - The soap opera surrounding the selection of the new head coach of the Bosnia and Herzegovina national team has finally ended.
Members of the Executive Board of the Football Association unanimously elected Robert Prosinečki, a legend of Yugoslav and Croatian football, as the new head coach and successor to Mehmed Baždarević.
Although before the start of the Executive Board meeting it was expected that the vote would be close and that the meeting would last late into the night, Prosinečki was ultimately elected unanimously with all 15 votes of the Board members.
After the unanimous election of Prosinečki as head coach, the question arises as to why it took so long, given that Baždarević became the former coach three months ago.
Could a successor to Meša have been found faster, especially knowing that Robert Prosinečki and Amar Osim remained as the only candidates for the position a month ago?
In the meantime, while negotiations over the selection of the new head coach were ongoing, certain media and journalists took public stances on which candidate they supported, and at one point, very low blows were struck against Prosinečki.
This is an additional reason why the Association should have made a decision on the new head coach earlier to avoid such a situation, which could ultimately lead to a deterioration of the atmosphere around the national team.
In the end, the saga got a positive outcome, so it is now up to the head coach to roll up his sleeves and start working. By the end of the month, friendly matches against the USA and Mexico in America await him, in which he will not be able to count on the main players, but will instead take mostly players from the domestic league on the trip.
This will be an ideal opportunity for the new head coach to see some new players in action who he could count on in the qualifiers for the European Championship, especially knowing that Ibišević and Lulić have decided to retire from the national team, and that numerous national team players are currently not playing in impressive form for their clubs.
The Association has set a clear goal for Prosinečki – qualification for the European Championship. It will be difficult, but not impossible.
