The international Grandmaster chess tournament Bugojno was held from 1978 to 1986, with tournaments organized every two years. Six world champions participated in the tournament: Anatoly Karpov, Boris Spassky, Mikhail Tal, Garry Kasparov, Vasily Smyslov, and Tigran Petrosian.
The winners of the first tournament, held from February 26 to March 16, 1978, were Karpov and Spassky. Karpov was the winner of the second tournament held from May 3 to May 25, 1980. The winner of the third tournament in May 1982 was the then-young star Garry Kasparov.
From May 5 to June 10, 1984, the fourth tournament was held, won by Dutchman Jan Timman. The winner of the last, fifth tournament, held from May 25 to June 14, 1986, was Karpov again. The fifth Bugojno chess tournament was the first 16th category tournament in the history of chess and was the strongest tournament in the world until then. Karpov won again.
The tournament was no longer played because its strength questioned the World Chess Championship.
