(Patria) – As previously announced by the media, Ronald Johnson could become the new United States Ambassador to Bosnia and Herzegovina. The White House announced that his nomination for the Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of the USA to BiH has been sent to the Senate for confirmation.
Johnson, a former brigadier general of the US Marine Corps, has no prior diplomatic or professional experience related to Bosnia and Herzegovina or the countries of the Western Balkans.
He was born in Duxbury, Massachusetts, and graduated in management from Franklin Pierce College in New Hampshire. During his military career, he completed the School of Amphibious Warfare, the Marine Corps Command and Staff College, and the Naval War College.
In more than two decades of service, he held a series of command and operational positions, including assignments in Lebanon, the Sinai, Cuba, Southwest Asia, and Iraq. He participated in Operations Desert Shield, Desert Storm, and Iraqi Freedom, and also commanded the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit.
He is the recipient of numerous US military decorations, including the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star Medal, and several Meritorious Service Medals.
To assume the position of ambassador to BiH, Johnson must undergo the confirmation procedure in the US Senate. His nomination is first considered by the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, after which the full Senate votes on it.
Only after Senate confirmation does the US President formally appoint the ambassador, who then assumes office after presenting credentials to the authorities of the host country.
In the US system, ambassadors do not assume office immediately after presidential nomination. The confirmation process represents an important mechanism of executive branch oversight and can take weeks or months, especially when there are political controversies or additional questions regarding the candidate.
According to available data, between one-third and one-half of US ambassadors are politically appointed candidates, while the remainder come from the ranks of career diplomats at the State Department.
