(Patria) - In addition to red and yellow cards, orange cards, which result in temporary suspensions, are very likely to be introduced in football soon, confirmed the International Football Association Board (IFAB).
A new rule that could have a major impact on football is on the horizon.
The idea of suspending players for tactical fouls, language, and generally unsportsmanlike conduct was discussed and supported by IFAB at its annual business meeting in London.
This was confirmed by the Chairman of the FIFA Referees Committee, Pierluigi Collina, who sits on IFAB's technical committee.
Collina said that the proposed tests would very likely be included at the professional football level.
In March, this rule change and its testing will be recommended at the IFAB assembly in Glasgow, and according to information close to decision-makers, it will most likely be approved.
This will be a new change in the refereeing rules that could have a significant impact on the game.
An orange card would mean a temporary dismissal of several minutes, probably ten, after which the penalized player would return to the field.
Interestingly, the orange card, like the red and yellow ones, would not be shown by the referee on the field, but would be indicated on the electronic board of the fourth official on the field.
Testing of the new rules could begin in the Premier League as early as the 2024/25 season, according to information coming from London, reports Sportklub.
