SARAJEVO, (Patria) - Chair of the Committee on Women's Rights Evelyn Regner calls on the EU and member states to step up support for victims of domestic violence during the COVID-19 crisis.
Both globally and in some EU countries, the number of domestic violence cases has increased by a third in the week following the introduction of movement restrictions. Women in violent relationships remain at home and are exposed to the abuser's whims for longer periods. Therefore, it is very difficult for them to call helplines, as the perpetrator is always nearby.
Reacting to this situation, Evelyn Regner (S&D, Austria), Chair of the European Parliament's Committee on Women's Rights and Gender Equality, stated: ''These days and weeks are particularly dangerous for women. Due to isolation and quarantine, we all face great psychological challenges, but women, and sometimes children, in unsafe homes are exposed to particularly cruel circumstances. Therefore, we must now pay special attention to this issue and expand our actions to stop violence against women.''
We will not leave the women of Europe alone
''I call on all EU member states to resolutely confront this problem and actively communicate where and how those affected can get help. This must include simple ways to contact and alert the police, such as text messages or online chats, and the use of code words with doctors. In addition, more places must be available in shelters and women's refuges. Whenever possible, the EU must financially support the measures of member states and help them communicate these measures,” she added.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, gender inequality in all its forms has come to the forefront to an exceptional degree.
"As OECD data shows, 70 percent of the healthcare workforce are women, a large part of unpaid care work is done by women, and the upcoming economic crisis will hit women much harder. Our job is to strengthen women's physical and mental health and their economic independence, in a sustainable way, regardless of the COVID-19 crisis. We will certainly not leave the women of Europe alone,” she concluded.
