SARAJEVO, (Patria) - The Communications Regulatory Agency (Agency) calls for preserving the standards of freedom of expression and information during the crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, and draws attention to the Statement of the Council of Europe's Committee of Experts on Media Environment and Reforms "Crisis situations should not be used as an excuse for restricting public access to information, nor should any restrictions on media freedom be introduced beyond those permitted by Article 10 of the European Convention on Human Rights.“
The Council of Europe, among other things, emphasizes:
- · The importance of independent media and quality journalism during a public health emergency caused by the spread of the coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19)
- The need to apply professional ethical standards in journalism;
- The need to disseminate accurate information, including detailed journalistic research, in order to prevent disinformation;
- The need to ensure appropriate working conditions for journalists, including medical protection while performing their duties.
Freedom of expression, media independence, and open thinking are essential principles rooted in European democracies that will enable us to overcome the great challenge currently facing Bosnian society.
