Workers who set off on foot from Bosnia and Herzegovina towards the European Union on Wednesday morning could face new problems at the Orašje border crossing, between Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia.
Nearly 200 workers from four Tuzla companies: Livnica čelika, Fabrika deterdženata Dita, Fabrike namještaja Konjuh, and tvornica obuće Aida, decided to leave BiH because they haven't received salaries for months. They hope to be granted asylum in one of the European countries.
The BiH Border Police confirmed for the BiH news agency Patria that workers who do not have valid travel documents upon arrival at the border crossing between BiH and Croatia will receive misdemeanor charges.
- We will not cause any problems for workers who have valid passports, nor will we deny them their human rights to movement. They will be able to leave BiH. As for those workers who do not have valid passports, we will treat them as citizens attempting to cross the border illegally, and they will receive misdemeanor charges – it was confirmed for Patria from the Orašje border crossing.
However, the border crossing from BiH to Croatia is not the only obstacle that disenfranchised workers might encounter. Even if they leave BiH without problems, just a few meters after the BiH border, they will be met by the Croatian Border Police, who have not yet stated whether they will allow the 200 Tuzla workers into their country, writes Patria.
