First anniversary of the death of a giant of BiH literature, Abdulah Sidran

(Patria) - Bosnian poet, writer, and screenwriter Abdulah Sidran passed away on this day last year at the age of 80.

For the last few months of his life, he was in a serious health condition.
Abdulah Sidran was born in Sarajevo on October 2, 1944, and was educated and graduated from the Faculty of Philosophy in his hometown.

He edited youth newspapers and magazines, and lecture forums. Until April 1992, he was employed at RTV Sarajevo as a 'leading dramaturg'.

He emerged in literature in the sixties with poems and prose, in the generation of young writers often called the 'sixty-eighters'. For his poetry books, he received literary and social awards (Sixth of April Award of the City of Sarajevo, Annual Award of the Association of Writers of BiH, Annual Award of the Publishing House Svjetlost, Zmaj Award).

His poetry collection Sarajevski tabut, published during the war, was awarded the Freedom Award by PEN-Centre France.

Selections from his poetry, translated into German, French, and Italian, were published in Austria, France, and Italy (Insel bin ich, im Herzen der Welt, Cercueil de Sarajevo, La bara di Sarajevo). For the Italian, bilingual edition, he received the 'Premio letterario 1996 della Fondazione Laboratorio Mediterraneo' award.

He was the screenwriter for the films Sjećaš li se Dolly Bell? and Otac na službenom putu, directed by Emir Kusturica, and Kuduz by Ademir Kenović.

He was a member of the Academy of Sciences and Arts of BiH and a master candidate in chess.
