Professor from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in Sarajevo Tarik Bajrović warned believers to avoid buying animals that have any skin diseases.
Bajrović told the Bosnian news agency Patria that a large number of sheep in Bosnia and Herzegovina have the so-called contagious ecthyma, which manifests as scabs around the animal's mouth or in other places such as the udder. The disease, Professor Bajrović notes, is not overly dangerous for humans, but it is still best to avoid animals with such health problems.
Also, Bajrović said that a large number of sheep also show signs of abscesses, which should also be paid attention to when buying a kurban animal.
Muslims around the world celebrate Kurban Bajram on September 24, when they sacrifice an animal to God, most often a ram, sheep, goat, cow or camel in Arab countries.
Religious authorities also note that sick animals should not be taken for kurban, but they must be fully grown and healthy animals, without any physical defects, writes Patria.
