Nedžad Mulabegović, former Rector of UNSA and Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, has passed away

(Patria) - Former Rector of the University of Sarajevo and full professor at the Faculty of Medicine, Nedžad Mulabegović, passed away at the age of 77.

Mulabegović was born in 1948 in Doboj, and after obtaining the title of Doctor of Medical Sciences, he held a number of positions in academic life.

He completed his university education in Sarajevo, where he obtained his degree as a Doctor of Medicine in 1974, graduating from the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Sarajevo. In the period from 1977-1979, he pursued postgraduate studies in "Experimental Medicine" at the Faculty of Medicine in Sarajevo, and in 1981, he obtained the title of Master of Medical Sciences by defending his thesis on "Characteristics of Neuronal and Neuroeffector Transmission During Development".

He immediately continued with his doctoral studies at the Faculty of Medicine in Sarajevo, and in 1986, he obtained the title of Doctor of Medical Sciences with his thesis on "Characteristics of Neuronal and Neuroeffector Transmission During Development".

During 1992, he completed his specialization and became a specialist in Clinical Pharmacology. He began his university career in 1975/6 as a researcher at the Institute of Pharmacology and Toxicology, and in the period from 1976-1981, he was an assistant at the Faculties of Medicine, Dentistry, and Pharmacy for the subject of Pharmacology and Toxicology.

In the period from 1981-1986, he was a senior assistant at the Faculty of Medicine, and in the period from 1986-1991, he was an assistant professor at the Faculty of Medicine in Sarajevo. During 1986, he was a lecturer in postgraduate studies at the Faculty of Medicine for the subjects: Methodology of Medical Research and Laboratory-Experimental Medicine. In the period from 1991-1995, he was elected as an associate professor, and from 1996 onwards, he became a full professor at the Faculty of Medicine in Sarajevo for the subjects of Pharmacology and Toxicology, as well as at the Faculty of Pharmacy for the subjects of Pharmacology and Clinical Pharmacy.

In 1991, he was the responsible lecturer for the postgraduate study subjects at the Faculty of Medicine Sarajevo: General Methodology of Medical Research and Experimental-Laboratory Medicine, and in 2000, he was the responsible lecturer for the postgraduate study at the Faculties of Dentistry and Pharmacy of the University of Sarajevo for the subject General Methodology of Medical Research.

As a prominent member of the academic community, in the period from 1992-2000, he served as the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine in Sarajevo, and from 1995-2000, he was the head of the most significant university in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the University of Sarajevo – Rector.

Through his rich university, scientific, and social contributions, he was the recipient of numerous recognitions and awards. 1989: Plaque of the University of Sarajevo on the occasion of its 40th anniversary; 1994: Charter of the Faculty of Medicine and KCU Sarajevo on the occasion of its 50th anniversary; 1997: Medal of KarlFranz University; 1998: Charter of the University of Tehran; 1999: Plaque of La Sapienza Rome; 1999: Medal of the European Rectors' Conference (CRE); 1999: Charter of the University of Sarajevo (1949-1999); 2000: International Order of Merit (IBC, Cambridge); 2007: Charter of the Faculty of Technical Sciences in Bihać; 2007: Lifetime Achievement Award of the Faculty of Medicine in Sarajevo; 2008: Most Successful Professor of the Faculty of Medicine UNSA; 2010: Golden Medal for BiH – ABI USA.

Furthermore, Mulabegović was a member of the World Association of Pharmacologists, President of the Association of Pharmacologists of BiH, and a member of the Presidency of the Assembly of Physicians of BiH.

He also held political positions, including being a member of the Main Board of the Party of Democratic Action (SDA) and a member of the Parliament of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
