Journalist and writer Snježana Mulić-Softić dies after battle with serious illness

(Patria) - Snježana Mulić-Softić, editor and journalist for Al Jazeera Balkans, has died, Anadolu reports.

The family confirmed she lost her battle with a serious illness. During her career, Mulić-Softić was a journalist, editor, writer and documentary filmmaker, leaving a deep mark on the media outlets where she worked.

She was born in Sarajevo on 14 September 1962, where she completed her primary, secondary and higher education, and already in the 1980s, when Sarajevo was experiencing the brightest moments of its existence, she became a journalist. She remained in her city during the siege, in the most difficult days, never giving up her journalistic calling and the written word.

During her career, she was a journalist and editor for the magazines BH Dani and Slobodna Bosna, worked for Hayat TV, and for the last 12 years as a journalist and editor for the Al Jazeera Balkans portal. She also published columns in several domestic and foreign media outlets.

She is the author of the award-winning short story collection Sanduk po mjeri and the novel Povratak. Her stories have been included in several anthologies of Bosnian-Herzegovinian prose. She was a member of the PEN Centre of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

She received the "Srđan Aleksić" Journalism Award, which is awarded for professional and continuous reporting on marginalised and vulnerable groups in Bosnian-Herzegovinian society and for the development of socially responsible journalism. She was also awarded for the best story about Srebrenica, received other awards, was socially engaged, and in 2006 the Society for Threatened Peoples nominated her for the Nobel Peace Prize as part of the "1000 Peace Women" project.

She is the author of two documentary films: Pismo preporučeno srcem is a documentary about life during the siege in the Sarajevo municipality of Novi Grad (the film also has a French version and was shown in France), while the docufiction film Jetimi deals with children from mixed marriages during the siege of Sarajevo.
