(Patria) - A concert by Mile Kekin, former frontman of the popular band Hladno pivo, was held tonight at the source of the Una River in Donja Suvaja. This was not just a musical event but also a peaceful protest by the local residents of this area against the planned construction of a hydroelectric power plant that threatens to endanger the unique ecosystem of the Una River.
The protests, which have been ongoing for weeks, have united the residents of Pounje on both sides of the border between Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Among those present were citizens of Bihać, led by the Prime Minister of the Una-Sana Canton, Nijaz Hušić, and Alen Zulić, acting director of the Una National Park.
In his speech, Prime Minister Hušić emphasized the importance of a joint fight to preserve the Una River, stressing that the Una is one and unique, and as such, it knows no borders, but connects people who will not falter in the fight to save it.
"I am here both privately and on behalf of the Government of the Una-Sana Canton. I came to acknowledge these people here because they are heroes to us, fighting for our common interest. We don't need to talk about what the Una means to us; it means life for the Una-Sana Canton, and we are connected to it not only emotionally but also economically and in every other sense. The Government of the Una-Sana Canton has activated all its mechanisms regarding this problem and has informed all competent institutions in our country. The Ministry of Spatial Planning and Construction has been involved in this process from the very beginning, and we will do everything to stop this ecocide," Prime Minister Hušić stated from the source of the Una.
Protest activities continue, and citizens and activists announce further legal actions to preserve this natural gem.
