President of Goražde mountaineers Zajko Šovšić succumbs to injuries sustained in February accident on Lapišnica

(Patria) - President of the Goražde - Maglić Mountaineering Club Zajko Šovšić died last night from injuries sustained in a severe accident on the Sarajevo-Pale road in Lapišnica.

The fatal accident occurred on February 7 when a van, carrying seven mountaineers from Goražde, including Šovšić, collided with a truck.

The injured were transported to the University Clinical Center Sarajevo (KCUS), and after prolonged treatment, some were sent for further recovery to the Cantonal Hospital Goražde or discharged home.

Šovšić remained under treatment at KCUS. Unfortunately, despite the doctors' efforts, he did not survive.

Many of his fellow citizens have bid farewell to Šovšić, describing him as a good man who promoted Goražde, the Bosniansko-podrinjski Canton (BPK), and indeed all of Bosnia and Herzegovina in the most beautiful way.

"May your paths in the heavens be clear... The contribution to the promotion of mountaineering made by Zajko Šovšić, the esteemed president of the Goražde - Maglić Mountaineering Club, is immeasurable, as is his commitment to fostering a love for nature and preserving the culture of remembrance.

He represented our canton, our city, and our homeland in the most beautiful way. The Ministry of Education, Youth, Science, Culture, and Sport of BPK Goražde extends its deepest condolences to the family, friends, and members of the Mountaineering Club," stated the Ministry.

Šovšić was particularly involved in organizing the hike to Grebak, which holds significant historical importance for the residents of Goražde, and for years worked to preserve the memory of the difficult war days.

He also actively participated in the organization and accompaniment of Goražde residents on the Peace March to Srebrenica, emphasizing the importance of the culture of remembrance and honoring the victims of the genocide.

Through these activities, he left a profound mark, connecting mountaineering with the preservation of historical truth and collective memory.
