Ankaragucu president receives lifetime ban from football

(Patria) - Faruk Koca, president of Turkish top-flight club Ankaragucu, has been handed a lifetime ban from football for punching the referee in the head immediately after his team's match against Rizespor.

Ankaragucu was fined two million lira (around 65,000 euros) and ordered to play five home matches behind closed doors, the Disciplinary Committee of the Turkish Football Federation (TFF) decided.

After Monday's match between Ankaragucu and Rizespor, in which the visitors equalised 1-1 in the seventh minute of stoppage time, Koca ran onto the pitch and punched the match referee, Halil Umut Meler, in the head.

After falling to the ground, Meler received several more kicks and ended up in hospital, from which he was discharged on Wednesday.

Koca was arrested the following day for the assault on the referee.
