Flowers laid at memorials on April 5th

(Patria) - Chairman of the City Council of Sarajevo Dr. Igor Gavrić and Mayor of Sarajevo Abdulah Skaka laid white roses at the memorials this morning on the occasion of April 5th, the Day of the Siege of Sarajevo 1992-1995. This year, the City of Sarajevo is officially marking this date as the Day of the Siege for the first time, in remembrance of the victims, defenders, and residents of the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Sarajevo survived and prevailed through the longest siege of a city in the history of warfare.

Mayor Skaka and Chairman Dr. Gavrić laid flowers at the memorials on the Suada and Olga Bridge, at the memorial for the children killed in Sarajevo, and at the Great Park.

"The City Council of Sarajevo adopted the decision that April 5th be the Day of the Siege of Sarajevo 1992-1995. This year, under extraordinary circumstances, we are officially marking April 5th as the Day of the Siege for the first time. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, we were forced to adjust the program in compliance with the orders of the competent authorities. However, we must preserve the memory," said Dr. Gavrić.

Mayor Skaka emphasizes that it is the duty and obligation towards this city, towards the victims and defenders, and towards the citizens who lived under siege, to mark the 1,425 days of the siege with dignity, despite everything.

"We must never lose sight of the fact that Sarajevo survived and prevailed through the longest and hardest siege in the history of warfare, during which more than 11,000 of our fellow citizens were killed, including 1,601 children. We must preserve the memory, we must pay tribute to the victims, fighters, and citizens, we must know and spread the truth so that evil is never repeated, to anyone," stated Mayor Skaka.
