Adherence to measures 'a matter of life and death'

(Patria) – In the next few days, the number of coronavirus infections will rise to 1 million, with more than 50,000 victims, announced the Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO) based on the number of confirmed infections that has already exceeded 900,000.

Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus claims to be 'deeply concerned' about the rapid, global spread of the infection with the death toll already exceeding 45,000.

In Spain, the most affected country after Italy, the number of fatalities exceeds 9,000, with 864 lives lost in just 24 hours. More than 100,000 people are infected there, which represents an increase of 7,700 compared to the previous day.

At the same time, cautiously optimistic news is coming from Italy about a slight slowdown in the current pace of infection. So far, 13,000 people have died in that country.

However, patients are also recovering, and in Spain, 22,647 people have recovered, i.e., about 20% of the total number.

France recorded 509 new deaths on Wednesday, bringing the total to 4,000, which does not include patients who died in nursing homes or outside hospitals.

The UN Secretary-General stated that this is 'the biggest crisis since World War II', while US President Donald Trump changed his initially relaxed stance towards the pandemic, now calling the obligation to adhere to measures – 'a matter of life and death'.
