(Patria) - Numerous citizens of Sarajevo queued in front of bakeries today to buy somuns for this year's first iftar.
Sarajevo somuns have traditionally been an integral part of iftar tables for centuries. During Ramadan, long queues form in front of bakeries, especially those in the old part of town where the best somuns are sold.
Thus, on this first day of Ramadan, queues of Sarajevans can be seen in front of bakeries, patiently waiting to buy somuns for the iftar table.
Ramadan somun is sprinkled with nigella seeds, which gives it a special aroma. During Ramadan, bakeries produce several thousand somuns daily.
Somun, lepina, or lepinja is a type of Bosnian cuisine pastry. The name somun for this pastry is characteristic of Sarajevo. In some parts of Bosnia and Herzegovina, these pastries are also called ramazanije.
