Istanbul mayoral election annulled, new vote on June 23

ISTANBUL, (Patria) - Turkey's Supreme Election Council has annulled the results of the mayoral election in Istanbul, and a new vote will be held on June 23.

At the session of Turkey's Supreme Election Council, a majority vote (7:4) today accepted the appeal of the Justice and Development Party (AK Party), which referred to certain irregularities and illegalities in the mayoral election held in Istanbul on March 31. The main opposition Republican People's Party - CHP narrowly won in Istanbul, thus ending, after 25 years, the control of Erdogan's party in Turkey's largest city.

The new mayor from the CHP, Ekrem Imamoglu, assumed office last month, when the counting was completed. Imamoglu received the support of 4,169,765 voters, while the AK Party candidate Binali Yildirim received 4,156,036, a difference of 13,729 votes.
