Pollen season in Sarajevo: Allergies increasingly common

(Patria) - The pollen season has begun, and due to a sharp rise in concentrations of pollen from allergenic plants in the Sarajevo Canton area, allergies among the population are becoming increasingly common.

Pollen from hornbeam, hazel, pines, poplar, willow, cypress and elm is present in the air, and in the coming days, pollen from birch and horticultural plants is also expected, due to the stabilisation of weather conditions and more sunny days during April.

Measured values ranged up to 487 pollen grains per cubic metre of air at the Pofalići measuring station.
“Based on data on current pollen concentrations in the air, as well as due to unfavourable climatic conditions that have been forecast, people who are allergic to tree pollen are advised to avoid park areas with woody plants, and to spend their free time within high-mountain ecosystems, i.e. above the upper forest line. People with seasonal rhinitis, in case of a change in clinical picture, should contact their doctor,” states the latest report on the presence of pollen in the air and its impact, which was submitted to the Ministry of Communal Economy, Infrastructure, Spatial Planning, Construction and Environmental Protection of the Sarajevo Canton by the Centre for Ecology and Natural Resources - Academician Sulejman Redžić.
