Battle of Pofalići: The Day Sarajevo Was Saved Again

(Patria) - The Battle of Pofalići represents the battle for Sarajevo. The aggressor forces wanted to cut the city in two by connecting Pofalići with the then-besieged Grbavica. The plan was to cut the city along the line Vogošća-Žuč-Pofalići-Marshal Tito Barracks-Grbavica.

At dawn on May 16, 1992, one hour earlier than the aggressors expected, the Army of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina thwarted this intention by defeating the aggressors. Although less armed, the ARBiH defeated the enemy and frustrated his intentions, thus preventing the complete blockade of Sarajevo. The fighters once again showed that it is not weapons but the heart of a hero that wins battles.

The Pofalići Brigade of the VRS, numbering around 1,700 members, the paramilitary formation "White Eagles" with 380 members, about 100 "Serbian policemen," and a group from the paramilitary formation "Werewolves" confronted the ARBiH fighters. The Serbian forces suffered a heavy defeat, and conditions were created for the ARBiH to advance towards the strategically important Žuč plateau north of Sarajevo.

The defenders of Sarajevo Edin Krako Deba, Miralem Miradžija, and Muris Đelkić Čičak were killed in the Battle of Pofalići.
