Raising the flag on Hum, marking BiH Independence Day in Sarajevo

(Patria) - The marking of March 1st, BiH Independence Day, began this morning in the country's capital with the raising of the state flag on Hum hill, accompanied by the playing of the national anthem.

Numerous delegations attended the raising of the state flag, including members of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina Željko Komšić and Denis Bećirović.

After Hum, the delegations will proceed to memorials to lay wreaths and pay tribute.

Komšić and Bećirović will host a formal reception this evening on the occasion of BiH Independence Day, which will be held starting at 8:00 PM at the Sarajevo City Hall.

Bosnia and Herzegovina's Independence Day has been celebrated since 1992, when a referendum was held on February 29th and March 1st, in which the majority of Bosnians and Herzegovinians voted for a democratic and independent state.

Recognition of the independent and sovereign country followed on April 6, 1992, from the European community states, and a day later from the USA. Independent BiH was admitted to the UN membership on May 22, 1992.
