Under American pressure: Christian Schmidt considering resignation as High Representative!

(Patria) - High Representative Christian Schmidt is considering resigning, Istraga.ba has learned from multiple diplomatic sources.

Schmidt is expected to announce his decision on resignation soon.

This German diplomat is under significant pressure from the US authorities, who have given him an ultimatum – to resolve the issue of state property.

Schmidt has even been threatened with sanctions, i.e., being placed on the American blacklist, if he does not step down from the position of High Representative, Istraga has learned.

To avoid potential consequences, Schmidt has confided in his closest associates that he will most likely step down from his position.

According to the same sources, Schmidt's resignation has also been agreed upon, among other things, between Banja Luka and Washington. This was, in fact, a package deal of the American authorities with Milorad Dodik and his associates when the Americans lifted sanctions on almost all officials from Republika Srpska.

Istraga.ba wrote about that agreement in the summer of last year.

It is now questionable whether Schmidt will present his semi-annual report to the UN Security Council on Tuesday.

The OHR announced on Saturday that Christian Schmidt is already in New York, where he met with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

During the meeting, the OHR announced, the High Representative had the opportunity to inform the Secretary-General about the challenges facing the Dayton Peace Agreement and their potential implications for the region and Europe.

The OHR did not specify what those challenges are.

This meeting, as we have already stated, was intended to be a prelude to Schmidt's address to the UN Security Council, scheduled for Tuesday, when the OHR report for Bosnia and Herzegovina is to be considered.

Schmidt's report covers the period from October 16, 2025, to April 15 of this year and defines the key challenges and political situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina during the previous six months.

The report emphasizes that the overall security situation in BiH is stable but fragile, and that the role of EUFOR remains relevant and justified.

Disagreements over the Dayton Agreement are cited as an obstacle to the functioning of institutions, whose blockade has been particularly pronounced in the past period.

The institutional deadlock is listed as one of the key challenges in BiH, and in addition, Schmidt's report identifies the narrative from Republika Srpska and the judicial blockade as key problems.

"I remain convinced that creating conditions for the use of state property for public interest development projects is urgent.

A situation where investment projects related to state property are legally impossible or require public authorities willing to ignore the law is unsustainable," Schmidt's report states.

Resolving the issue of state property is crucial for the realization of the Southern Gas Interconnection project, which would reduce BiH's dependence on Russian gas.

Although he warned that the issue of state property must be resolved, Schmidt avoided making a final decision, which caused revolt among the American administration.

Due to all of this, Schmidt's legitimacy is also expected to be discussed at the UN Security Council session scheduled for Tuesday.

We remind you that Schmidt was delegated to this position by Germany. For years, he was one of Zagreb's main figures.

Before his appointment, Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković awarded him an order of the Republic of Croatia.

Schmidt will be remembered as the High Representative who, in April 2023, suspended the Constitution of the Federation of BiH for 24 hours to install the "Trojka" and HDZ in power.
