Wimbledon begins, can Djokovic catch Federer

(Patria) - The most prestigious tennis tournament in the world, Wimbledon, begins today with a match between Argentina's Sebastian Baez and Chile's Tomas Barrios Vera.

Serbia is represented by five participants, led by the best tennis player of all time, Novak Djokovic, whose first-round opponent will be Pedro Cachin.

Wimbledon is the oldest and most important tennis tournament, and its history began back in 1877 with the first tournament at the All England Club, in the part of London from which it got its name.

Wimbledon remains the only major tennis tournament that is still played on its original surface, grass, which is why the game itself got its original name, "lawn tennis".

Roger Federer has eight championship titles in the men's tournament, while Martina Navratilova is by far the best in the women's with nine. Navratilova also has the most wins in the Wimbledon "open era" with 120, while Roger Federer is again the best in the men's competition with 95.

Goran Ivanišević is the lowest-ranked player to have won the prestigious tournament, as he reached the title in 2001 from 125th position on the ATP list.

The world's best tennis player, Djokovic, has 86 career wins at Wimbledon, while all other players from the top 20 on the ATP list currently have a combined 85 wins. Novak Djokovic will begin his participation in this year's Wimbledon on Centre Court no earlier than 2:30 PM in a duel against the world's 67th-ranked player, Argentinian Pedro Cachin.

The prize fund for this year's Wimbledon is 56.5 million dollars.
